OUR MISSION

We believe in the power of drawing to enrich lives and promote well-being. By making art accessible to all, we empower individuals of all backgrounds with the confidence, skills, and inspiration needed to embrace creativity as a tool for self-expression and emotional wellness.

WHAT DO WE OFFER?

  • We take a fresh approach to drawing—one that removes the fear of failure and embraces the joy of exploration. Our classes encourage a growth mindset, where mistakes are part of the creative journey and every sketch is a step toward self-discovery. Through a variety of free and paid classes, we help you break away from perfectionism, build confidence, and experience drawing as a tool for self-expression and well-being.

  • Drawing is more than just art—it’s a skill that fosters focus, confidence, and emotional well-being. Our programs offer structured learning in traditional and digital drawing techniques, helping participants develop artistic abilities that can be used for personal enrichment, creative careers, or therapeutic expression.

  • Art is for everyone, and we’re committed to making it accessible. Through free classes, affordable workshops, and a growing network of artists and educators, we create opportunities for people of all backgrounds to experience the joy of drawing. We provide a supportive environment where creativity thrives and connections are made.

HOW WE STARTED

It all began when the COVID pandemic hit and people were isolated and in need of community, creative expression, and stress relief. Fellow Brits, Caroline Mustard and Katy Lea, both trained artists, authored a book called The Joy of Drawing: A Beginner’s Manual, accompanied by online classes aimed at bringing their step-by-step teaching method to those who had always wanted to learn to draw. As a result, this vibrant community was formed and from there, The Joy of Drawing Inc., a non-profit based in the San Francisco Bay Area was created. The group began offering free classes in local libraries, conducting corporate art events, online and in-person workshops, and recorded curriculum available to anyone who wants to learn.

Their book is the core of this program and is available on Amazon for the general public. It is also available to libraries and bookstores on Ingrams.

  • With 5,000+ students served in our programs across the Bay Area, we’re fostering a supportive space where artists of all levels can learn, create, and connect through drawing.

  • Bringing creativity and community engagement to 22 cities, our workshops provide accessible opportunities for artistic expression across the Bay Area.

When I look back at my sketchbooks and see where I started there is a huge difference in skill, but the biggest change is that I was hesitant to try things in the beginning - I was so judgmental about myself, and now I’ll just draw and create - no matter the medium.”

The Joy of Drawing team are so enthusiastic about what they do that it is infectious, yet, their attention to the small steps you need to master to grow more proficient are so helpful - especially for the beginner artist"
